ABOUT
Najee Malik Wilson is an African American Artist based in Colorado; born in Stephens County, Georgia in 1998. He grew up with his mother from infancy until his late teens, where he lived with his father. Living with his mother, he would experience Japanese manga/animation for the first time with works such as Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto, Tite Kubo's Bleach and many more through the discovery of Shonen Jump Magazine. With his father, he would soon discover Shonen Sports Manga with Ito Ogure's (Oh! great) Air Gear, which foretells the depths of competition within the athletic world.
His most notable revelation, however, was the adult cartoon series The Boondocks, created by Aaron McGruder, depicting black characters with the same animation style with stories more suitable toward Wilson's experiences as a young African American. In 2017, these visual aspects inspired him to start his first semester at Piedmont University in Georgia as a progressive Art Major with a focus in drawing and a minor in English.
His style plays heavily on use of Graffiti and Street Art while combining characteristics of Surrealism and Cyberpunk with hints of fantasy. Wilson experiments with these blends in his series of works for BlueNMW, which highlights an escapist/alternative future building as a form of joy. These pieces pull from the characteristics of Afrofuturism by reshaping the imagery of cyberpunk, graffiti, and Hip-Hop culture. His three biggest influences are Shin'Ichiro Watanabe (Japanese Animator and Director for Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, LAZARUS), Trenton Doyle Hancock (African American Artist for Something American and Pandemic Pentameter, and Takashi Murakami (artist for Flowers in Heaven, Jellyfish Eyes: Black 4 and AMERICA TOO).
In a year's time, a few select works were chosen for his museum showcase before his graduation in May 2022. Now, he is working on his original comic series BlueNMW, a story about the last man on the abandoned Planet Earth that pursues to traverse the Northern Milky Way to leave his mark and discover his roots. And, at this very moment, Wilson is still coming up with new ideas to translate ways the world can be enhanced for the Utopia he seeks to create.
