The origins of the Buffaloes began simply.
In 2017, a small group of American and Canadian expatriates in Nairobi started playing competitive games against Japanese expatriates in a sandlot. Over time, the team became the North American Buffaloes and began playing on sandlots/soccer/rugby fields around the Nairobi area playing Kenyan teams, traveling multiple times to Meru (where Kenya's only regulation field is located) to play in tournaments, and hosting skills training for Kenyan youth.
This attracted the attention of Kenyan baseball enthusiasts including the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s (JKUAT) students, staff, and baseball team.
In 2019, following a game at JKUAT, the Buffaloes were invited by the University to provide advice for developing a baseball field on their Juja campus just outside of Nairobi. After a “if we build it, they will come” moment, JKUAT and the Buffaloes agreed to develop a first-of-its-kind baseball facility. The Buffaloes are providing support in the form of fundraising, awareness building and technical assistance in the field design and construction stage.
Additionally, the team is playing a catalyst role in the development of youth-focused baseball we're calling, Junior Buffaloes.
The Nairobi Buffaloes now consist of players from various countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan and Kenya.
