Taking care of your day-old chicks after purchasing them is crucial to ensure their health and development. Here are some important steps to follow:

1. Brooder setup: Prepare a brooder box or area with enough space for the chicks to move around. Ensure it is draft-free, dry, and well-ventilated. Use a heat source like a heat lamp to maintain a temperature around 95-100°F (35-38°C) initially and gradually reduce it by 5°F (2.8°C) each week until the chicks are fully feathered.

2. Bedding: Provide clean and dry bedding such as wood shavings or straw. Avoid using newspaper as it can become slippery and lead to leg problems.

3. Food and water: Offer fresh, clean water in shallow containers that the chicks can access easily. Also, provide a high-quality chick starter feed that contains essential nutrients for their growth and development.

4. Observation: Regularly monitor the chicks for any signs of distress, sickness, or bullying. Sick or injured chicks should be isolated immediately and provided with appropriate care.

5. Lighting: Maintain a consistent light schedule of 24 hours a day for the first few days to encourage eating and drinking. Afterward, gradually decrease the light to 14-16 hours to promote natural day-night cycles.

6. Hygiene: Keep the brooder clean by regularly changing the bedding and water. Remove any spilled feed to prevent mold growth and contamination.

7. Space: Provide enough space for the chicks to roam and exercise, but avoid overcrowding, as it can lead to stress and aggression.

8. Socialization: Chicks are social animals, so ensure they have companionship. Avoid mixing chicks of different ages as older ones may bully the younger ones.

9. Health care: Consult with a veterinarian familiar with poultry to establish a vaccination and health care plan. Regularly inspect the chicks for any signs of illness or abnormalities.

10. Gradual introduction to the outdoors: Once they are fully feathered, around 6-8 weeks old, introduce the chicks to the outside world gradually. Start with supervised short sessions to prevent shock or stress.
