Biography
Dr. Nagappa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. Prior to joining IIT Madras, he worked as a Research Associate at The University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, and as a Senior Research Fellow at IIT Kharagpur. He is also a lifetime member of The Institution of Engineers (India).
He obtained his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and holds an M.Tech in Machine design and a B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, Karnataka.
Research Interests
Dr. Nagappa specializes in the design, modelling, manufacturing, and testing of advanced composite materials and structures, with applications across aerospace, defence, spacecraft systems, marine, and offshore renewable energy. His current research focuses on:
Experimental solid mechanics– Developing experimental approaches to investigate structural behaviour and failure mechanisms.
Multiscale modeling – Integrating smaller-scale phenomena into predictive models to inform large-scale structural design.
High-temperature composites – Innovating resilient materials suitable for extreme thermal environments ei., Ceramic, Carbon/Carbon materials .
Thermoplastic & Thermoset composite aging mechanisms – Studying long-term durability and performance under diverse operating conditions.
Sustainable materials – Exploring eco-friendly alternatives and manufacturing processes for next-generation composites.
Advanced composite manufacturing & Testing methodologies – Innovating fabrication techniques and testing methodologies to improve performance, consistency, and scalability.
