Nishabd (English: Speechless) is a 2007 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Ram Gopal Varma, starring Amitabh Bachchan and debutant Jiah Khan.[1] The story of the film took inspiration from the 1999 American film American Beauty, and the 1986 Indian film Anokha Rishta.[2]

The film opens with young Ritu (Shradha Arya) bringing her friend Jia (Jiah Khan) to spend the holidays with her at her home in Kerala. Ritu's parents Vijay Anand (Amitabh Bachchan) and Amrita (Revathi) have a beautiful home surrounded by picturesque surroundings. Vijay is a photographer and Amrita is a homemaker.

The film was shot in 20 days[3] in Munnar, Kerala.[4] The claim that it was inspired by Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita was denied by Amitabh Bachchan in the CNN IBN TV show Unspoken relationships - Nishabd special (3 March 2007).

In the present, Sakshi and Vivek decide to expose Richard to the FBI using the footage. However, Richard kidnaps Vivek and holds him hostage. Maha, who put a tracker on Richard's car earlier, kills Richard and saves them. Afterwards, Richard and Anthony's crimes are finally proven, and Anthony's murder officially remains unsolved. The film ends with Sakshi and Vivek paying respects to Sonali at her grave.

In 2013, director Hemant Madhukar re-watched Singeetam Srinivasa Rao's dialogue-less film Pushpaka Vimana (1987) and developed a desire to make a similar dialogue-less film. He was keen to explore the idea with a hearing and speech impaired protagonist. Once he wrote the story that would become Nishabdham, he pitched it to the PVP Group for production, but there was no progress for months despite PVP liking the idea. Madhukar then discussed the project with screenwriter Kona Venkat, who helped improvise the script and develop the screenplay. Venkat felt it had potential to be an "international project", and included dialogues.[4]

Principal photography began in May 2019. The filming took place predominantly in the United States, with a 60-day long schedule.[10][11] The film was simultaneously shot in Telugu and Tamil.[12][13] The international actors spoke their lines in English.[4]

The film was scheduled to be released on 21 February 2020 but was postponed to 2 April 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the film's release was postponed indefinitely.[14][15] The official trailer was launched by Amazon Prime Video on 21 September 2020.[16]

Karthik Kumar of Hindustan Times called Nishabdham "a colossal mess", and added, "Despite the presence of some talented stars like Anushka and Madhavan, the film is excruciatingly boring and lacks the thrills to keep one invested throughout."[20] Sowmya Rajendran writing for The News Minute, opined that "The ideas must have sounded good on paper but the writing and execution, unfortunately, don't hold up." While appreciating the performances of Shetty and Pandey, Sowmya wrote "Michael Madsen as police chief Richard Dickens deserved more to his character. With a limp and a swagger, he does his best with what he's given."[21]

Norms and perceptions define this world. Many of us abide by these preconceived notions or norms and consider them sacrosanct. We never question them. We never defy them. We simply take them at face value. We prefer to remain silent. Nishabd (meaning speechless), directed by Ram Gopal Varma, is a film that defies some of our conservative perceptions and also manages to beautifully demystify the feeling and angst that is love.

The film is embellished with numerous standout sequences. One of the most notable ones is the scene where Vijay is reminiscing the time he spent with Jiah and chuckles about it whilst in bed at night. Sans any words said, we inherently share his joy as he chuckles in bed whilst his wife is puzzled beyond reason. It is a fabulously envisioned sequence. Through this "nishabd" sequence, we see how he seems to have found a new zest for life. And it is this feeling of youth that he gained by being with Jiah. In one sequence, he syas that it is her youth that attracted him and not her "youthful body". This is further detailed in an important sequence where Vijay explains that as we grow old, we gradually lose the capability to 'enjoy' happiness. By being with Jiah, he was able to 'enjoy' the feeling of elation and happiness. Thus, Vijay was enamoured of this new lease of life and resurgence of energy.

Maverick director Ram Gopal Varma masterfully constructed the scenes and the characters. There is a dull tinge of blue to the entire film, perhaps to evoke the feeling of monotony that Vijay may be going through. This is a radical decision because, it shows us that despite being surrounded by luscious hills and tea estates, there seems to be a sense of dreariness that prevails. Two aspects of filmmaking that particularly stand out are the cinematography and the background score. Amit Roy incorporates a feeling of flying through his cinematography. Several sequences, such as the tour of the tea estate and the sprinkler scene, have been shot in a manner that makes us, the viewers, feel as though we are gliding (maybe to try imitate the feeling of being in love). Amar Mohile has done a fantastic job with regards to the background score. There is a shade of playfulness and friskiness to the score, and at the same time there is a hint of thriller elements thrown in. A truly underrated score.

Nishabd is a film that is blessed with brilliant performances. Amitabh Bachchan plays Vijay with utmost sincerity and vulnerability. His helplessness for the feelings he harbours coupled with the sinking feeling of having destroyed every semblance of a good family life are all complex emotions that he conveys with complete ease. The late Jiah Khan is an absolute revelation. To go head-to-head against an iconic star like Bachchan in her very first film, and to carry it off in a believable fashion, is not a small achievement by any margin. There was a mischievousness in her demeanour that is incredibly alluring. Her demise was a sad loss for the industry. Revathy as Amrita, the doting wife of Vijay, gives an incredible performance. And, despite having a cameo appearance, Nasser enacts the role of the empathetic and understanding brother-in-law with absolute brilliance.

Just when you thought it was safe to brand Ram Gopal Varma into a predictable style, the filmmaker strikes back with Nishabd, a bittersweet left hook that leaves you reeling with its poignancy. He also manages to extract a phenomenal performance from The Megastar, who proves he's always, always capable of making your jaw drop. And then there's the ravishing Jiah Khan, who makes this bold, punchy film a knockout.

The film opens in the insanely green Munnar, the kind of casually breathtaking locale that gives Kerala a good shout at that Divine Country claim. Through the hazy bluegreen tint of the camera we come across the stark white spikes of Amitabh Bachchan's french beard in extreme close up, as he starts his narration -- as he, standing on the edge of a rocky precipice, tells the story of a girl that drove him to thoughts of suicide.

And then comes time to wake up and smell the passion. The most atypical of RGVs films, this one smartly takes an achingly long time to get from moment to moment, with much to read between the lines, the glances -- and between Amitabh Bachchan's sighs. The film luxuriates in this leggy languor, the entire first half focussing on the inevitable spark, the undeniable chemistry, between this perfectly cast odd-couple.

The first half of the film is brilliant, showcasing amazing performances. Outside of the lead couple, Revathy is reliably solid -- even while having to struggle with some too-obvious lines -- but Arya overplays her bratty daughter card to annoying proportions. As is the norm with Ramu in offbeat mode (Naach, Kaun) the film is exquisitely framed and very well shot (there is a wonderfully twisty long take as Bachchan stands outside the house) -- but this one goes a step better. It's nicely, lazily edited, it's slow pace a great temperamental accompaniment to Vijay's heartbreaking fall from grace.

There is arguably no way to cleanly end a tale of such doomed, ridiculous love, but the hurry of the second half undoes a lot of the first section's greatness. By the way, this film is a demonstrable argument against the need for an Intermission at all. Still, the film ends with a decidedly unfinished feeling.

Overall, Nishabd is a powerful film -- more than you might initially think. It humanises a strong, scandalous subject and succeeds in making it alarmingly commonplace, extremely possible. The two lead characters are very well fleshed out and acted, and by the time the film ends, if you feel anger at the filmmaker for showing preference toward a protagonist or at not tying it all up more conventionally, that is a debatable triumph; you love the characters more than the story.

After leaving his mark in the advertising industry, R Balkrishnan steps into the bigger arena with his first feature film Cheeni Kum, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu and Paresh Rawal.

The director, who admits that he is 'numb' just days before the film's release, claims that his film is not similar to Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd, which had Amitabh Bachchan romancing an 18-year-old Jiah Khan.

Advertising is basically an idea medium like films. The only difference is that in advertising that idea is for 30 seconds while for films, it takes longer. For me, to convey that idea in a two-hour plus film was a challenge.

Both are different films. Cheeni Kum is a romantic comedy with no element of controversy attached to it. Nishabd was a well-made serious film. Nishabd had elements of black while Cheeni Kum has more shades of white.

I think he is the greatest composer of this country. No one has achieved his greatness in terms of composition in this country. Unfortunately, not many people have heard his songs in North India because he mainly works in Tamil films. be457b7860
