(Südpfalz)
Southern Palatinate holds one of Germany’s leading wine regions and is especially renowned for Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Noir. In summer, you can attend countless local wine festivals! There is even a calendar for it.
You can also find many castles, ruins, and historic sites, such as Hambach Castle and Trifels Castle, where Richard Lionheart was once imprisoned (I have seen most of these ruins myself on semi-voluntary Sunday hikes).
Because of its sunny, Mediterranean climate, it is often called “Tuscany of Germany” (which my Italian colleagues have opinions on. Rightfully so).
More narrowly spoken, I grew up in a tobacco-farming region, both my grandfathers were tobacco farmers. My home town has many sheds meant to dry tobacco in. They are taller than a house, but mostly not in use anymore (Weirdly, I know only one person in my entire extended family that ever smoked regularly).
