Kia ora and welcome to my website!
With over 15 years of experience across academic, government and non-profit sectors in Europe, North America, the Middle East and New Zealand, I have developed a strong ability to identify opportunities and drive change.
My career has equipped me with the skills to provide expert analysis, advice and leadership drawing on strong program management, monitoring and evaluation, engagement and research skills. I am adept at translating strategies and goals into clear, actionable plans and context-specific frameworks. Also, I am well-acquainted with mixed-methods designs, and preparing and presenting complex research and technical documents for a range of audiences.
I am especially interested in projects that involve working with the complex environmental, political, social, and economic landscapes of organizations, communities and individuals in Aotearoa New Zealand.
My subject matter expertise covers social entrepreneurship, social impact and accountability, social investment, youth empowerment, female leadership, resistance art, accessibility, and Middle East Politics and Economy. I also have in-depth knowledge of specialist data capability and census knowledge and products.
My methods skill cover both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. In particular, I am skilled in mixed methods social network analysis, comparative analysis, content analysis, interviews and focus groups.
Since joining Stats NZ in 2022, I have held several roles, including Senior Advisor (Census Transformation, Specialist Data Capability) and Manager (Research and Development Hub, 2023 Census Products and Services). In these roles, I have led complex projects following Stats NZ’s information and data governance standards, processes, and strategies. My work has involved cross-unit and inter-agency collaboration, with a focus on customer needs and changing data landscapes, and I have developed a deep understanding of the data capability of various groups, the machinery of government, and working with our Treaty partners.
Since 2019, I have been an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch and a Teaching Fellow at the University of Otago in New Zealand (2021-2022). Before having joined UC, I was an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey (2016-2019).
In addition to my academic work, I have been working as a consultant for various German and international governmental and non-governmental institutions bringing together my academic background with moeasurement, evaluation and learning (MEL), policy analysis and advice. Most recently, I have been involved in several initiatives launched by the NZ Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet on countering terrorism and violent extremism.
I am a founding member of the Middle East and Islamic Studies Aotearoa (MEISA) network in New Zealand and am acting currently as its leader. This interdisciplinary network brings together researchers, the public and private sector and civil society. MEISA promotes knowledge and research on the Middle East and Islamic world from a New Zealand perspective (https://www.otago.ac.nz/politics/research/meisa.html).
Outside of work, I am a Flamenco dancer with over 20 years of dance experience. In 2024, I co-founded the Christchurch Flamenco Collective to bring together dancers and musicians and connect across the motu to organize events and workshops.
