About

Welcome to my webpage!

My principal research interests are in the field of Comparative Politics and the Political Economy of authoritarianism with a regional focus on the Middle East and North Africa. In particular, I focus on authoritarian resilience, neoliberalism and elite politics.

I am an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch and a Teaching Fellow at the University of Otago in New Zealand (2021-2022). Before having joined UC, I was an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey (2016-2019). I received my Ph.D. degree in Political Science from the University of Tuebingen (Germany).

I am a founding member of the Middle East and Islamic Studies Aotearoa (MEISA) network in New Zealand and am acting currently as its Head Coordinator. This interdisciplinary network brings together researchers and graduate students and promotes research on the Middle East and Islamic world from a New Zealand perspective (https://www.otago.ac.nz/politics/research/meisa.html).

In addition to my academic work, I have been working as a consultant for various German and international governmental and non-governmental institutions bringing together my academic background with policy analysis and advice. Most recently, I have been involved in several initiatives launched by the NZ Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet on countering terrorism and violent extremism.
