Arriving and taking public transportation in Madrid

International participants will usually arrive at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, Madrid’s main international airport, located about 12 km north-east of the city. The airport is connected to the city by Metro, bus, Cercanías train (from Terminal 4), taxi, and ride-hailing services.  

Public transport in Madrid: how it works

Madrid has an extensive and reliable public transport system, including Metro, city buses (EMT), and Cercanías suburban trains. For most visitors, the easiest options are:

• Metro + bus/metro connection

• Airport Express bus

• Cercanías train from Terminal 4 only

For Metro travel, you normally need a contactless transport card. In practice, most visitors use the Multi card, which can be purchased from ticket machines in Metro stations, including the airport Metro stations. The official Metro information states that the Multi card costs €2.50. Tickets are then loaded onto that card.  

At the airport, there are Metro ticket machines at the entrances to the airport Metro stations, and you can buy the card and load it there before entering the system.  

For those staying in Madrid for several days and expecting to use public transport frequently, a Tourist Travel Pass may be convenient. It is available for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7 consecutive days, and can be purchased at Metro stations, including at the airport, and from dedicated devices at T1 and T4.  

Option 1: Metro from the airport

Madrid Airport is connected to the Metro network by Line 8, serving Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 and Aeropuerto T4. Line 8 connects the airport with the city via Nuevos Ministerios. Metro operates daily from 06:05 to 02:00.  

If you travel by Metro from the airport, please note the following fares:

• Metro Zone A single ticket: €1.50–€2.00, depending on distance

• Combined ticket: €3.00

• Airport supplement: €3.00 for entering or exiting at the airport Metro stations  

This means that travelling from the airport by Metro usually requires both a normal Metro fare and the airport supplement. These tickets are loaded onto the Multi card purchased at the station machines.  

Option 2: Airport Express bus

An alternative is the 203 Airport Express bus, which runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year. During the day it connects the airport with Atocha, and at night it connects with Cibeles. The journey to central Madrid takes about 30 minutes to Terminal 1, with a few additional minutes for later terminals.  

The Airport Express ticket at €5, and it can be bought on board.  

Option 3: Cercanías train

If you arrive at Terminal 4, you can also use the Cercanías C1 suburban train, which connects the airport with the Madrid rail network. This option is only available from T4.  

Bus tickets in Madrid

For regular EMT city buses, a single ticket costs €1.50 and can be bought directly from the driver when boarding. EMT states that the maximum permitted cash change on board is €5.  

The 10-trip Metrobús ticket is valid on EMT buses.

Recommended option from Madrid city centre: Cercanías train

The easiest way to reach ICMAT from central Madrid is by Cercanías train.

Take line C4, C4a or C4b in the direction of Cantoblanco Universidad / Alcobendas / Colmenar Viejo, and get off at Cantoblanco Universidad.

Convenient central stations connected to this line include: Sol, Nuevos Ministerios, Chamartín, Atocha (

From Cantoblanco Universidad station, ICMAT is about a 10–15 minute walk. Leave the station and walk straight along Calle Francisco Tomás y Valiente. ICMAT is at the end of the street, at the intersection with Calle Nicolás Cabrera.

By bus from Madrid

Several intercity buses also serve the Cantoblanco campus.

A useful option from the city is bus 714, which leaves from Intercambiador de Plaza de Castilla and goes towards Universidad Autónoma / Universidad Comillas. Get off near the Centro de Biología Molecular “Severo Ochoa” stop and walk approximately five minutes along Calle Nicolás Cabrera to ICMAT.

Other bus lines serving the area include 827, 827-A and 828. Please check the timetable in advance, since some lines do not operate on Sundays or public holidays, and some only run on weekdays.

From Madrid-Barajas Airport

From the airport, especially from Terminal 4, one option is bus 827, which connects the airport area with Universidad Autónoma / Cantoblanco. The journey from/to Terminal 4 is approximately 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

Alternatively, take public transport from the airport into Madrid and connect to the Cercanías C4 line via a central station such as Chamartín or Nuevos Ministerios.

Practical advice

Participants are advised to check live timetables before travelling, especially for buses. For most participants staying in central Madrid, the Cercanías train to Cantoblanco Universidad will usually be the simplest and most reliable option.

Venue and transport for Wednesday-Friday: CUNEF U., Leonardo Prieto Castro (LPC)

The campus is located in the north-western part of Madrid, in the Ciudad Universitaria area. It is well connected to the city centre and to the airport by public transport.

Recommended option from Madrid city centre: Metro

The easiest way to reach the CUNEF Leonardo Prieto Castro campus from central Madrid is by Metro.

The closest Metro stations are:

• Vicente Aleixandre, Line 6

• Francos Rodríguez, Line 7

• Guzmán el Bueno, Lines 6 and 7

From any of these stations, the campus is approximately a 10-15 minute walk.

Line 6 is particularly useful for connections from Moncloa, Argüelles, Nuevos Ministerios, Cuatro Caminos and other major interchange stations. Line 7 is convenient for participants staying near Canal, Alonso Cano, Gregorio Marañón or Avenida de América.

By bus

The 132 bus stops very close to the campus, with a stop near CUNEF / Colegio Mayor Alfonso X El Sabio. This can be a convenient option from the Ciudad Universitaria / Moncloa area.

Depending on your starting point, other local buses may also serve the surrounding Ciudad Universitaria area. Please check live routes and timetables before travelling.

From Madrid-Barajas Airport

From the airport, take Metro Line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios. From there, change to Metro Line 6 and travel to Vicente Aleixandre or Guzmán el Bueno. The campus is then about a 10–15 minute walk.

Alternatively, from Nuevos Ministerios you can continue by taxi or ride-hailing service; the journey to the campus is usually short, depending on traffic.

CUNEF Universidad is divided intro three campuses. The second half of our workshop will take place in the Leonardo Prieto Castro campus, or LPC for short. LPC consists of five buildings, named after the university itself: buildings C, U, N, E and F! The lecture room is located on building E, first floor. The cafeteria is located in building U.
