The North American Computational Linguistics Open Competition is a competition in linguistic problem solving for high-schoolers. Students are challenged to apply logical thinking to solve puzzles involving languages from around the world. Example problems can be found at https://naclo.org/practice.php.
No prior language or linguistics experience is required, and many successful NACLO competitors start with no background in linguistics. All problems can be solved using only pencil and paper.
High-performing Open Round competitors will be invited to participate in the Invitational Round in March. The top 4 Canadian students in the Invitational Round are selected to represent the Canada Anglophone team at the International Linguistics Olympiad.
