NACC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Continue Impressive Season at Warhawk Invitational
October 11, 2024
The Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) Mustangs Cross Country teams delivered an impressive performance yesterday – October 10 – at the Warhawk Invitational, hosted by Calhoun Community College in Oakville, Alabama. The men's team finished 4th overall out of 15 teams and emerged as the highest-ranking community college team in the competition. The women placed 5th out of 11 teams.
The Mustangs achieved remarkable individual milestones, with team members posting 8 personal records (PRs) and 12 season-best times. Kadie Brooks was a standout on the women’s side, setting a new NACC school record in the 5K with a time of 20:15, finishing 5th overall in the race and earning a commemorative t-shirt for her top performance. The women’s team, despite missing two runners, recorded their second-best average time in school history.
On the men’s side, Braxton Williams also made history, setting a new school record in the 8K with a time of 27:57. The men’s team had an average mile pace faster than their 5K average from the season opener at Foothills, demonstrating their steady improvement throughout the season.
NACC Cross Country Coach Patrick Laney is proud of his team’s performance and continued improvements. “It has been a phenomenal week for our teams,” said Coach Laney. “We have had quite a bit of adversity the last 10-14 days, yet you would not know it based on the results. All 18 athletes have shown remarkable resilience individually this week and a deep commitment to one another and our program. Our performance Thursday was a perfect end to our regular season on what was a beautiful afternoon.”
“We are extremely proud of our Cross Country teams at Northeast,” stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “Coach Patrick Laney and his assistant Aki Ishiwatari have taken a second-year team to one of the top teams in the state and region. In addition to their skills, these young men and women represent Northeast so well!”
Coach Laney also noted, “I am grateful for the recognition these young men and women are getting for what they are doing in our second season. I know what their goals are, and they are all still ahead of us. We have Regionals in Huntsville on Friday, October 25, and I am confident their toughness and love for one another will once again carry them through.”
The Mustangs' solid performances at the Warhawk Invitational follow an outstanding performance last weekend at the Mountain Goat Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee. NACC’s Men’s team won the championship, while the Women’s team were the runners-up in Sewanee. Both teams have consistently been nationally ranked this year.
