Volunteer Work Description

For this project volunteers will independently conduct their choice of acoustic bat surveys at a 10km by 10km grid cell of their selection. This includes deploying stationary detectors during the day that will passively monitor for bats, or actively operating a car-mounted detector at night to collect real-time data. Training will be provided to operate this equipment.

Volunteers may choose whichever survey type best fits their interests or schedule. Conducting both is also welcome.

Stationary surveys take place over 5 days, with extra time given if needed. On the 1st day of the survey, 3-4 stationary detectors will be deployed during daylight hours at predetermined locations in the grid cell. Detailed information on how to reach each location is provided to the volunteer. After sitting out for 4 nights, detectors will be retrieved.

Mobile surveys are conducted at night over a week long time period. The survey involves placing a detector on top of a vehicle and driving a predetermined route at night. During this process the driver will receive real time bat calls from any detected in the vicinity. Two separate surveys are required to be driven, but  volunteers are free to choose when, so long as it fits in the deployment schedule.

At the end of the field season, volunteers will receive the results of the grid cells they surveyed.
