WHAT IS ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING?
Argumentative writing is a piece of writing that aims at convincing the readers about the writer's argument/idea. The characteristics of argumentative writing lie in the argument and controversial issue. Therefore, the topic of the essay is usually related to pros and cons in the society or around us, for example "The act of smoking in the education institution should be banned". or "patriarchal ideology should be abolished", or "LGBT should be legalized".
TOPIC OF ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY EXAMPLES
The topic of an argumentative essay, besides it contains an argument, is pros and cons. It usually raises two opposing arguments. Some will agree but some others will disagree towards this topic. If a topic can raise pros and cons in society, it is a good argumentative essay topic.
Some examples of argumentative essay topics:
Should the government provide financial incentives for families to have children to address the declining birth rate?
Should we require parents to provide their children with a certain level of nutrition and physical activity to prevent childhood obesity?
Should parents implement limits on how much time their children spend playing video games?
Should cellphones be banned from family/holiday gatherings?
Should we hold parents legally responsible for their children’s actions?
Should children have the right to sue their parents for neglect?
Should parents have the right to choose their child’s religion?
Are spanking and other forms of physical punishment an effective method of discipline?
Should courts allow children to choose where they live in cases of divorce?
Should parents have the right to monitor teens’ activity on social media?
Should parents control their child’s medical treatment, even if it goes against the child’s wishes?

THESIS STATEMENT
Thesis statement is a clear statement about the main idea of the essay. Usually, a thesis statement is in the form of a sentence which express the position of the author related to the pros and cons about an issue. It has to be specific and of course not too specific as well.
Which working thesis statement would be better?
Vaping should be illegal because it can lead to serious health problems.
Many students do not like vaping.

EXAMPLE OF COUNTERARGUMENT
1.Some people believe that vaping is not as harmful as smoking cigarettes.
2.Critics argue that vaping is safer than conventional cigarettes.
3.On the other hand, one study has shown that vaping can help people quit smoking cigarettes.
