The Call of Cthulhu

Cthulhu is an ancient anthropomorphic being with a squid-like head and wings on his back (Picture seen left was drawn by Lovecraft). He is said to be hibernating in the ancient underwater city of R'lyeh. Cthulhu is worshipped by humans and other monsters alike. He reigns in the ocean, and any human that looks upon him will go insane.

He first appeared in H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The Call of Cthulhu" and served as the main antagonist and launching point of the broader mythos. Fans of Cthulhu's character and mystery (including Lovecraft himself) developed new stories that expand on the universe that Lovecraft created. The story follows Francis Thurston as he reads through the notes of his dead uncle, which led him to uncover a horrifying mystery. In the uncle's letters, Thurston learns that his uncle first heard of Cthulhu through the investigations of a police inspector named John Legrasse. Legrasse was leading a search for missing people when he uncovered a horrifying cult meeting and detained many of the cultists. Through their interrogations he uncovered the name "Cthulhu" and the existence of "great old ones." Thurston decides to continue with his uncle's investigation and learns of a lone survivor of a sailing voyage who encountered a mysterious island. The survivor claims to have accidentally awakened Cthulhu before barely surviving with his life. The story ends with Thurston feeling relieved that Cthulhu's city is still lost, but fearful that he may know too much.

Stage Adaptation of "The Call of Cthulhu"

The stage adaptation of “The Call of Cthulhu” by Frank Blocker was a short run performance that reimagined Lovecraft's short story. A story that portrays a fascinating tale of cultic monsters and horror. It does offer a unique take on the influence and practice of religion as well. This story explores cult activities, ancient mysteries, and fear of the unknown. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulhu” is a very timeless story and shows that cults and religion seem to be an ever-present influence on modern and ancient society alike. A stage adaptation of this story being made introduces its themes to people in more developed times. But despite how far technology advances, the belief and fear of God are constant qualities in society. “The Call of Cthulhu” plays on this aspect of society, expands on it, and uses it to instill fear and suspense into the audience. The stage adaptation “The Call of Cthulhu” was very well received by critics, claiming it to be an amazing improvement and expansion of the source material. They claimed that Blocker did an amazing job seamlessly switching between characters and inhibiting traits that mad them all unique. A one man show sounds incredibly boring but Blocker’s critics said that his ability to build intrigue and suspense was phenomenal despite his drawbacks. The use of dolls, lighting, and a simple set also elevated his performance and helped progress his story further. It stuck to the source material but expanded it by giving the audience the chance to perceive it visually. Reading horror can certainly cause a reaction, but the ability to see it gives the actor a way to build suspense and fear in a whole new way.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

"Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth", is a video game where the Deep Ones are one of the monsters apart of the scary story line. Set in the town of Innsmouth, inspired by Lovecrafts "The Shadow over Innsmouth '', takes the player into the world where the Deep One is not just a myth but a scary reality. The Deep Ones are scary sea creatures that look a bit like fish and humans mixed together. They are creatures with scaly skin, webbed hands, and large eyes that glow in the dark. And not only that, but in the game they’re closely linked to the town of Innsmouth, a part of the town secret. The game puts you in the shoes of Jack Walters, a detective who comes to Innsmouth to solve a mystery.

As Jack, you quickly find out that the town and its people are hiding something big. You realize that the Deep Ones are more than just a scary sea monster, but they've made a secret pact with the town, offering protection in exchange for sacrifices. This deal has been in the town for years, this has led to the Deep ones mixing with the town people, creating a blurry line between humans and the Deep Ones. From this comes an important aspect of the Deep Ones and how they challenge the ideas of what a monster is. Is it by the way they look and their actions, or is it the choices of the townspeople have made? This question adds a layer of depth to the games, and the deeper you dive into the games world, you realize that the Deep Ones isn’t just another enemy but a symbol of the unknown tied into a larger complex story.

Nyarlathotep

Nyarlathotep is a deity in the Mythos that is associated with the Great Old Ones. He appears in many of the H.P Lovecraft novels. Nyarlathotep, in particular, is one of the more unique horrors in the Lovecraftian genre. Unlike the fellow Old Ones, he has a different style and way of doing things. He goes by many titles throughout the novels, such as The Crawling Chaos and The Faceless God. Nyarlathotep is awake and roams the Earth, unlike the other deities. This means that he plays an active role in the events of humanity, tormenting people and driving them to insanity with a sick gleeful nature. He is considered one of the evilest of the Lovecraftian horrors. He is known for his ability to transform himself into many different forms, which is referenced in the video game Persona series with his numerous boss versions. Nyarlathotep is one of the few Persona characters out there that are actually based on the H.P. Lovecraft stories. He is the final boss of all three of the original Persona games. Atlus, the Japanese video game company, opts for inspiration for its demons outside of the usual avenues. Long before he would be a staple in the first trilogy of Persona games, he made his debut in 1994 with the release of Shin Megami Tensei II on the SNES. In the Persona games, he appears like a sleeker version of Slenderman with a blue and white aesthetic going on. In this game, he manipulates a different set of people to create the New World Order and further spreads rumors once more. In the end, he is confronted by the main characters again, including Tatsuya Suou and Maya Amano, but is defeated again. After this, he retreats and loses in the battle against Philemon that is at the heart of the first three Persona games.
