Class Overview
This class will teach you the fine art of hitting hot steel with a hammer! Over the course of six sessions (which need not be consecutive), I will teach you to heat, shape, and finish several different projects, all of which have their own unique challenges and benefits.
Course Structure
Students will be expected to understand the following concepts after each class, and be able to complete the listed tasks:
Class 1: Forge Safety, Starting a Forge, Maintaining Heat, Tool Technique, Set-Up/Clean-Up Procedures
Class 2: Basic Shaping (squaring, tapering, curling), Basic Metallurgy, Tool Use and Care
Class 3: Decorative Cuts, Twists, and Punches, Finishing
Class 4: Challenge: Use What You Know! - Make a functional project that incorporates 2 different decorations in the design.
Class 5: Differentiating Blacksmiths (armorers, bladesmiths, whitesmiths, etc.) and learning their techniques (planishing, quenching, tempering, etc.)
Class 6: Final Project: Create an item that incorporates 3 different types of decoration, 1 trade-specific technique, and has 2 different functions (ie. a bottle-opener/ corkscrew tool, or a shovel/coal rake).

Once your 6 classes are done, you are more than welcome to return and use the materials and tools, provided you pay the class fee for each visit (the 6 day discount still applies!)
Pricing
For Adults:
$25/class, or $125 for 6 classes (one course)
For Students (highschool or college, 16+):
$15/class, or $75 for 6 classes (one course)
Breakdown
$5/class goes toward the Westport Historical Society. The remainder goes toward purchasing new materials and tools for the classes, including forges, anvils, tongs, hammers, and PPE (personal protective equipment).

Disclaimer
The Westport Historical Society and Myth Forge reserve the right to deny classes to anyone unwilling to sign a liability waiver upon arrival of their first class. By signing, you agree to waive your right to prosecute either hosting party in the instance of an injury caused by misuse or mishandling of provided materials, including, but not limited to, burns, lacerations, punctures, and blunt force trauma. If under 18, a parent or guardian must sign a liability waiver on your behalf in order for you to participate.
There is a strict no-tolerance policy in place. If caught purposefully misusing or mishandling materials by an instructor, you will be escorted from the premises without a refund. Anyone caught disregarding an instructor's directions, especially regarding safety concerns, will be removed from future classes at the instructor's discretion.
