Course Description
Beginning level of Taekwondo course is designed for students who wish to learn various self-defense techniques, including kicking, falling, punching, and self-defense techniques. Students will also foster physical fitness training, mental discipline, martial arts philosophy and culture.
The practice of Tae Kwon Do – an ancient Korean art of self-defense – develops character through selfconfidence, patience, physical fitness, mental alertness, leadership, humility and respect.
Required Equipment
Loose workout clothing. Tae Kwon Do uniform is recommended but optional. Students can get their own or through the class.
Course Goals:
Introduction to Tae Kwon Do. Strength and conditioning training, flexibility training, basic upper body and lower body techniques, which include punches, blocks, kicks and strikes; forms, sparring, selfdefense and meditation. Besides physical fitness, training also strengthens the mind, in particular, courtesy, self-control, discipline, attention, mental alertness, humility, perseverance and respect. Strengthens one’s mind and humbles one’s soul.
The goal of this class is to help students to improve coordination, balance, endurance, agility, flexibility and overall fitness of healthy body. Moreover, the class will guide students to learn various self-defense skills and to build selfconfidence, self-discipline, concentration/focus, coping strategies and it will help students to keep balance in life and a is great stress release for a busy college lifestyle.
Learn and train about Taekwondo-based self-defense skills.
Learn up-to-date knowledge and various combination techniques of Taekwondo.
Develop physical and mental health as well as overall wellness.
Develop positive personal character which will contribute to students’ academic lifestyle
Overview of course
I. Implementation
a. Learn the brief history, philosophy and etiquette of Taekwondo.
b. Learn proper callisthenic exercises.
c. Acknowledge personal safety and hygiene.
d. Motivate self-training with fun and satisfaction.
e. Introduce taekwondo way of self-defense by self-discipline and confidence.
f. Improve general health and fitness through Taekwondo.
II. Instruction Methods
Classes will be based on lecture, demonstration, repetition and correction, teaching aids, individual activities. All classes begin with light warm-up exercises and a review of previous instruction and introducing new techniques via zoom session.
• Due to COVID 19 outbreak, class will be taught by the zoom during the regular class time. • Starting March 30, classes will take attendance via Zoom meeting by checking in via chat. • A list of techniques will be given, so students can follow when they have some free time. • Zoom meetings will be 15 minutes after your class time and end 15 minutes before. • Please find a safe and open space to practice. III. Methods of Evaluation & Assessment • Evaluation is based on participation, progress of learning skills and presentation at the tests. • Students must receive approval from the instructor for make-up classes.

Introduction to Tae kwon do Introduce Taekwondo program and its history and accomplishments at BU and FitRec Introduce this particular class: what they will learn, what to expect, what to wear, eat/hydrate before class, will take attendance, not competing against anyone, golf game, etc. Introduce myself, Master Boon, and Master O Light exercise, introduction of plyometrics, light stretching Talk about self-defense.
