The novel by V. S. Naipaul moves between farce and acerbic social commentary on Trinidad, the country of his birth. The characters are mainly members of Trinidad's Indian community. The protagonist is Ganesh Ramsumair, a frustrated writer who rises from poverty on the back of his dubious talent as a "mystic" masseur, known as Pundit Ganesh, who can cure illnesses. In the end he becomes a successful colonial politician, under the name G. Ramsay Muir.

The masseur's public career has lasted only from 1943 to 1954. The mistake would be to assign too much significance to Ganesh. His lack of significance is the whole point. He rises to visibility as a home-grown guru, is co-opted by the British colonial government, and by the end of the film is a nonentity shipped safely out of sight to Oxford on a cultural exchange. Critics of the film have criticized Ganesh for being a pointless man leading a marginal life; they don't sense the anger and hurt seething just below the genial surface of the novel. The young Trinidadian Indian studying at Oxford, who meets Ganesh at the train station in the opening scene, surely represents Naipaul, observing the wreck of a man who loomed large in his childhood.

Ganesh begins his career as a schoolteacher--but managing a recalcitrant class known as the Remove, "a sort of rest station for the mentally maimed," proves a mixed blessing and he returns to the back country to rusticate. While at loose ends, he runs into an Englishman named Stewart, a genuine Dharma bum who wears the yellow robe of a Buddhist monk. Stewart gives Ganesh some back copies of a theosophist publication entitled "The Science of Thought Review" and in a sense converts this Trinidad Brahmin to the mysticism of the Orient.

Ganesh, who had been toying with the idea of setting up as a masseur, now becomes one--but with mystic and literary overtones. In a locale where there are so many masseurs that "they go have to massaging one another," Mr. Naipaul's Pandit enjoys limited success until he discovers his talent for faith-healing. Drawing on his arcane knowledge (he owns the entire Penguin and Everyman series), he cures a small boy of hallucinations and is launched on a course that leads him into punditry and politics.

Ganesh stumbles his way from failed author to unexpected masseur and eventually on to being a politician and hero of the people about whom songs are written. At every stage of his journey Ganesh succeeds despite being something of a fraud or accidental hero.

This comic novel focuses on a frustrated writer of an Indian descent, Ganesh Ramsumair, who is supposedly a "mystic masseur", or a masseur (massager) who has magical talent. In colonial Trinidad, masseurs were regarded as medics of sorts. Using his supernatural talents, Ganesh rises from a life of poverty to become an extremely successful and eminent politician, chronicled by the book. Over the course of the novel, many other eccentric characters are introduced who affect his ascendance to affluence in a variety of ways, including his wife Leela, her father Ramlogan, and an assortment of his patients who are plagued by a motley of diseases (many of which are strange and unique).
