Mr. Tri and Ms. Lia were my mentors during my three-week-immersion in Semesta School. These English teachers have shown commendable various teaching methods during their teaching. I was really amazed by their innovations and strategies to provide the students with valuable and necessary knowledge.
Let me start with their teaching methods. As what I have observed, they usually use student-centered instruction to facilitate the learning, where the students need to actively participate in class. In addition, they establish collaborative learning where they let their students work with their classmates in pairs and groups. They also use inquiry-based learning, which engages students to make real-world connections through high-level questioning. Furthermore, game-based learning is also a good teaching strategy, where the teachers utilize learning sites with games to make the learning activities more engaging. Lastly, flipped learning is also evident in their teaching. It is a type of blended learning which allows the students to read the online materials before they enter the class.
The teachers have their own teachers’ book, a version of the learners’ books given to the teachers that has explanations and suggested activities. I can say that it is innovative because of how interactive the books are. Each book has a soft copy, where they can just click some buttons and they will direct you to the learning activities. They also have their own Chrome books for their lesson plans and presentations. On the contrary, they still use traditional teaching materials, such as strips of paper containing questions, activity sheets, and game boards.
Since they have been using the Cambridge curriculum, their books are also from Cambridge. They use these books for their daily lessons, where the activities are organized from vocabulary, grammar, to writing. When it comes to their technology tools, they utilize their Panel Board or Tutortouch as their board. What I am amazed with are the sites that they use to make the tasks of their students. As for Mr. Tri, he uses Cambridge One, Quizizz, Edcite, and Blooket. While Ms. Lia uses Cambridge One and Quizziz.
It usually happens at the end of the class, where the teachers task their students to apply what they have learned from their lessons to make a product or performance. For instance, Ms. Lia has tackled about the different national parks in Indonesia. Afterwards, she gave the students an activity where they need to present a powerpoint presentation about their favorite national parks and share it to the class. Another one is in Mr. Tri’s class, when he tasked his students to make a conversation with their classmates to talk about their favorite things to do at home. From here, it is clear that these are examples of authentic assessment because the students can apply what they have learned into meaningful real-life experiences.
