In a context of hate messages there will be a range of roles like you have in any group situation - online or offline. To get a full picture of the context of (online) hate, it is important to recognize these roles. According to the principles of SEL awareness is the first step to come to management.
Next to the person who hates and the victim(s), you have different types of witnesses:
Person who hates
Victim of hate speech
Bystander (someone who witnesses the hate message)
Upstander (someone who stands up to the hater and comes into action)
Cheerleader (an enthusiastic supporter of someone or something)
Stirrer (a person who deliberately causes trouble between others by spreading rumours or gossip)
Admirer
Follower
Joker (a person who makes fun of the situation)
