Program of Research

The author I found for my area of research is Dr Mathias Berger, a professor of Clinical Psychophysiology in Germany. Unfortunately, I was not able to find his website, in fact, any information related to him aside from his work is extremely difficult to find. This is partially because there is a YouTuber and an astrophysicist with the same name. What i did find was that he is the head of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, at Albert-Ludwigs-University, in Freiburg, Germany. He works primarily with sleep and depression and has done a lot of research into the role of Acetylcholine and its receptors on REM sleep. Many of his articles have limited access because he did a lot of research with Dr. D. Riemann, and it seems that none of his articles are open access on any scholarly website. Dr. Mathias’ overall research goal seems to focus on understanding the mechanisms of sleep and how they relate to depression and Alzheimers.

The first of the articles I looked at was “Differential Effects of the Muscarinic M1 Receptor Agonist RS-86 and the Acetylcholine-Esterase Inhibitor Donepezil on REM Sleep Regulation in Healthy Volunteers” This article looked at how an agonist and inhibitor effected REM sleep regulation. The Donepezil inhibitor was found to enhance the duration of REM sleep while the M1 Receptor Agonist selectively shortened REM latency.
