CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF ST STANISLAUS
AND ST WENCESLAUS
AND ST WENCESLAUS
More than 900 years old, coronation place of Polish kings, ordination place of priest and bishop Karol Wojtyla, Polish national shrine and the cathedral of the archdiocese of Krakow. Towering high above Krakow within the royal Wawel castle.
"You all know very well what this Wawel cathedral has been and is for me.”
- St John Paul II
Climbing up the Wawel castle hill in the evening, we were stopped in front of the cathedral entrance. The holy mass was taking place and the no tourists rule was strictly enforced. It even did not help us to have a priest with us - there are way too many priests in Poland, even a bishop might be without a chance. Maybe a pope would have been cordially welcomed, well, at least a Polish pope. And that is why I respect this place, so close to John Paul II's heart.
