The Basilica of Sárospatak is closely linked to Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, who was born nearby in the castle. The church reflects medieval faith and devotion, honoring her legacy of charity, humility, and compassion, while standing as an enduring symbol of Sárospatak’s spiritual and historical importance.
"In St Elisabeth we see how faith and friendship with Christ create a sense of justice, of the equality of all, of the rights of others and how they create love, charity. And from this charity is born hope too, the certainty that we are loved by Christ and that the love of Christ awaits us thereby rendering us capable of imitating Christ and of seeing Christ in others.”
- Benedict XVI
We visited this beautiful place twice. First in winter together with the whole family as our youngest daughter is Elisabeth, The second time in summer with our parish, walking from here to Kosice, the other possible birthplace of St Elisabeth of Hungary. It is not only the cultural, historical and religious significance of this place, but also the beautiful hills that made us feel welcome.
