BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS
KRUPKA - BOHOSUDOV
CZECH REPUBLIC
The old pilgrimage church with the votive statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and a former Jesuit college in the city center of Krupka in Northern Bohemia.
“Mother of Christ entered into the Passion of her Son through her compassion.”
- St Bernard of Clairvaux
This visit took place many years ago, it was a completely new region for me. I remember that I was surprised by the unpretending beauty of nature and the desolation of buildings in the region stripped from the past and struggling to make up for some future. Yet, there must have been centuries when pilgrims from all around the mountainous region gathered around the tiny clay statue of Our Lady, bringing their own sorrows to her compassion. And the resurrected grammar school nearby casts the first beam of light returning to this beautiful place.
I visited it again 11 years later, the church has been nicely restored. The beauty of the moment: It was a Friday, shortly after noon, no one would have expected a mass at this time... But it was starting just in the moment I was entering the church...
