Raised in Coral Gables, Florida, I received degrees from the University of Florida in Mechanical Engineering (1964) and Nuclear Engineering (1965). My first computer program (1966) was in Dartmouth Basic on a GE time-share computer using a Teletype Model 33 ASR with a paper tape punch and a 300 baud (~bps) telephone modem with acoustic coupler. I used it for engineering calculations because the slide rule and the analog computer were tedious. Later I learned FORTRAN, and much later C, C++, and Visual Basic, and still later VBA and VBScript, all self-taught.
I lived in Silicon Valley (San Jose, California) 35 years during the dawn of microprocessors and personal computing. My first PC was an Osborne 1 purchased as a Christmas present to myself in 1981. It was portable (or luggable, weighing 25 pounds). It had a Z80 CPU with 64 KB RAM and two 5¼" floppy disks. It was packaged with CP/M and CBASIC (Digital Research), MBASIC (Microsoft), WordStar (MicroPro), and SuperCalc (Sorcim). The last two were precursors of Microsoft's Word and Excel. I was Disk Librarian of the First Osborne Group (FOG) and wrote articles for the FOGHORN newsletter. Our meetings were hosted by Dysan at their presentation auditorium in Santa Clara. We would setup our computers and share our disk library of public domain software downloaded from bulletin board systems (BBS) using a 1200 baud Hayes Smartmodem. I still have my Osborne 1; it ran okay several years ago, but now it fails to boot from the floppy disk. I also have old issues of FOGHORN and Osborne's The Portable Companion magazine.
At the turn of the century (Y2K), I returned to Florida and live in the Tampa Bay area (Champa Bay). I use Excel almost every day to manage personal records. I use Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and My Excel Toolbox to make that more efficient.
