H.M.S. Richards

Among many other important church figures, Steiner is also related to Harold Marshall Sylvester Richards Sr. (commonly known as H. M. S. Richards). Elder Richards was a well-known Seventh-day Adventist evangelist and author. He was born in Iowa, and is most famous for founding the Voice of Prophecy radio ministry. He was a pioneer in religious radio broadcasting, and his ministry inspired broadcasts on more than eleven-hundred stations, in thirty-six languages. He also inspired Bible courses in eighty languages offered by one-hundred-forty-four correspondence schools. Elder Richards also created The King's Heralds, which is a male gospel music quartet, in 1927. The King’s Heralds have recorded over a hundred albums encompassing thirty languages. The quartet is primarily known for their a cappella-style singing and close harmony.

The Canine Murders

The King’s Heralds traveled to Steiner's home in December of 1988, to give a Christmas concert. Around a hundred and twenty guests were present for this private performance. Days after the concert, Samuel Steiner's two dog's were found murdered in his front lawn. Rumors that Steiner f/k/a Leggett had left and the Seventh-day Adventist Church were being spread by the president of the world church, inciting acts of revenge.

Desmond Doss

Samuel Steiner is also related to Desmond Doss, a United States Army corporal who served as a combat medic with an infantry company in World War II. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Guam and the Philippines. Doss further distinguished himself in the Battle of Okinawa by saving seventy-five men, becoming the only conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor during World War II. His life has become the subject of books, a documentary film entitled The Conscientious Objector, and the critically acclaimed 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge.

The Steiner Family website introduces the readers of the Bipolar Winter novel series to background information on how and why specific leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church were able to purchase a federal investigation, indictment, trial, and imprisonment of Samuel David Steiner (late 1980s and early 1990s).

John Harvey Kellogg, M.D.

Samuel Steiner f/k/a Vernon Leggett is related to John Harvey Kellogg, M.D., and his wife, Ella Ervilla Eaton.

Karl Marx

He is also related to the German philosopher Karl Marx and his wife, Freiin Johanna Bertha Julie Jenny von Westphalen and their seven children. Marx was ancestrally Jewish as his maternal grandfather was a Dutch rabbi, while his paternal line had supplied Trier's rabbis since 1723, a role taken by his grandfather, Meier Halevi Marx.

It is this modest lineage that plays such an important role in the plot of the novel Bipolar Winter through the fictional character, Samuel Summers.

In 1990, after the man who would become the president of the SDA Church accused Steiner f/k/a Leggett of a white collar crime he didn’t commit, Steiner’s father recommended, on advice from his close friend, that he (Steiner) make no mention of his lineage until the accusations and court case had been resolved. Leggett’s father feared the leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church who were executing a plan to assassinate Steiner’s reputation would only try to use Steiner’s lineage against him. The leaders of the church wanted Steiner to go to prison as retribution for what they felt was a betrayal—Steiner’s refusal to give doctrinal false testimony to millions of Seventh-day Adventist members around the world—Steiner's teachings concerning why Adventist should not be worshiping of the Jewish Sabbath (see below).
