HISTORY:
St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica is a Roman Catholic Church in Chennai near the neighborhood of Guindy and very close to Chennai International Airport. The Syrian Christian community of India trace the origin of their church to St. Thomas the Apostle. From the 17th century onwards this part of Chennai was populated predominantly by Anglo-Indians.
HOW TO REACH:
The nearest railway station is St Thomas Mount and Guindy. The church is just 2kms from the station. You can hire an Auto or you can book a taxi, or else you can travel by bus. The nearest bus stop are Mount bus stop, Kathipaara, Jyothi theatre & Butt road bus stops. Once you get down from the bus the foothill is at walking distance from the bus stop.
VIEW:
The church is located on the top of a high hill. From the top the church we can see international airport, we can also watch flight landing and takeoff. The best view is at night. The church is opened from 6am-8pm. On top the church there is a small bell tower, an old banyan tree and a statue of Mother Teresa. We can reach the top by any mode of transport or we can also use stairs which lead to the church .
EXPERIENCE:
I have personally visited this place it is very peaceful inside the church. Once you step inside the church you can feel the presence of God the place is so divine. Inside the church we can see the statue of Jesus and also there are information on the relics preserved by the church. Every day they conduct prayers in different languages (Tamil, Malayalam & English). From the top we can see 360 degree view of the Chennai city. It is one of the best religious place in Chennai. I would suggest to visit this place at night, as the view of the city and especially the airport looks awesome at night.
