Liberation Day

Two purple hearts and his POW medal

This is an amazing story of my amazing father, with detail from his original draft into the Army through his liberation and return home. He rarely spoke about the war, but one day when I was around 18, I got him to record this hour long story in the backyard of our house in California. I later converted the cassette to this digital mp3. Of course, if he had not survived, I would not be here. He married my mom upon his return, and I was born 13 years later.

You can listen to Mort Herbert's War Story (Click for new tab - then download and open in iTunes or other MP3 player). The end of the story is cut off but what he says is that upon his return he was amazed to learn that his parents didn't know he was a POW.

You can read the story here My Fathers War Story Text and its also on the Pegasus Archive.

See Photos of Stalag IVB at a the Pegasus Archive which also has a lot of information on Prisoners of War from WWII where you can read stories of the prisoners and see photos from various camps.
