Valentina Tereshkova
WHO IS SHE? Is a cosmonaut, Russian politician and engineer, already retired. She is the first and youngest woman to have flown in space with a solo mission on the Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963. She orbited the Earth 48 times, spent almost three days in space, and to date remains the only woman to have been on a solo space mission.

Before her recruitment as a cosmonaut, Tereshkova was a factory worker working in a textile factory and an amateur paratrooper. To join the Corps of Cosmonauts, Tereshkova was honorably inducted into the Soviet Air Force, thus becoming the first civilian to fly into space. After the dissolution of the first group of female cosmonauts in 1969, she was a prominent member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, serving in various political offices. She remained active in politics after the collapse of the Soviet Union (USSR) and is regarded as a hero in post-Soviet Russia.

The astronaut was chosen from more than 400 candidates for her skill as a paratrooper. Aboard the Vostok-6 spacecraft, Tereshkova's mission lasted three days during which it orbited the Earth 48 times.
As it became known later, the journey was not easy for Tereshkova, who spent the three days in orbit vomiting due to motion sickness caused by space navigation.
To this day, Valentina Tereshkova remains the only woman who has traveled alone into space.
