Invasive species (boreal raccoon)

The boreal raccoon is a mammal of North American origin. Currently, it is found in many European countries as a result of the release or escapes from fur farms and from the homes of individuals who kept it as a pet.


Characteristics :

-It has been seen in Madrid, Mallorca, Galicia, Castilla-la Mancha, the Basque Country, Cantabria and Catalonia.

-It is an omnivorous and voracious animal that can eat from acorns to endangered amphibians.

-adapts to any habitat, although it prefers riparian forests.

-it reproduces rapidly, being able to have more than 10 young in a single litter.

-weighs between 5 and 15 kg.


Since the 20th century, raccoons have also spread through Europe, mainly the Caucasus, after escaping from fur farms, and they behave as an invasive species due to their great adaptability.
