As we celebrate this day of freedom on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, let us not forget its history. On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation declaring all enslaved people legally free. Union soldiers marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading copies of the proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. However, not every enslaved person was notified. In the confederate state of Texas, enslaved persons would not be notified until June 19, 1865, which later became known as “Juneteenth”. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act making Juneteenth a federal holiday.
