My name is Mrs. Rivera and I am so excited to be your teacher. My goal is to be here to support you and to help you complete your classes and help you to discover more about yourself as a learner!

About Me:
A quick "about me,"
I live in West Palm Beach, Florida. It's summer ALL the time here, so I miss the snow!
I love music & singing, and used to be an elementary music teacher.
In my spare time I love to read, and spend lots of time at my local church.
I am passionate about teaching and helping students to achieve their goals.
I am so proud of you for being here and can't wait to see you working hard on those dreams of yours!
What I do as your Teacher & Mentor:
Class Login: I will send you an initial welcome letter which will have your username and password for Genius, which is the website where you will find your classes.
Contact:
Our school week runs from WEDNESDAY to TUESDAY! (Think of Wednesday as your new Monday!
The state of Michigan requires that we make mentor contact to account for your attendance. I'll remind you about this on Wednesdays.
Expect to speak with me at least twice per week (and gladly more if you need anything!)
I would like to set up a regularly scheduled Zoom meeting with you to go over your goals for the week. We will talk about scheduling this during our first conversation.
Parent Updates: I will contact your parent/guardian weekly with updates on your progress. (Please note, if you are 18 or over, I will ask your permission for this.)
Grading: I will keep your grades up to date and ensure that you receive all possible credit.
Mid Point: I will check in with you halfway through your course for the mid-point check in. We will be sure you are meeting all requirements up to that point.
DBA: I will complete your discussion based assessment with you at the end of your course to be sure you are prepared for your End of Semester test/Final Exam.
Resources: I will support you by directing you to a success coach who can help you with resources you may need outside of academics.
Tutoring: There are tutors for EVERY subject! I will support you by directing you to tutors who can help you with a subject area you are struggling with or have questions about. (See my homepage for the link)
Power Hour: I will provide a weekly fun time, called "Power Hour," where you're welcome to join and just take a fun hour break with me! (See my homepage for the link)
I am here for you. If you ever have a question, please call me, text me, e-mail me, send me a message over Genius, or schedule a Zoom meeting with me.
Any question is valid and I will do my best to help you.
Click on each box below to find more information.
STEP ONE: Log in to Genius using the username and password given to you by Mrs. Rivera.
STEP TWO: Click on the class you want to work on.
STEP THREE: At the top of your class, you will see some intro videos and information. Please watch all videos and read any intro information there.
STEP FOUR: Start with UNIT ONE in your class. If you don't see any lessons, be sure to look to the right of the title "Unit One" and expand the unit. Once it's open, you should see a list of Tutorials (the lessons) and Mastery Tests (the quizzes)
IMPORTANT: DO NOT TAKE A MASTERY TEST WITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE TUTORIAL FIRST
Each tutorial MUST have at LEAST 15 minutes spent on it before taking the mastery test.
Remember the tutorials have all of the information you will need for the rest of your class. They are super important! You can have them read to you, translated, take notes while you're going through them, just use all those tools on the lefthand toolbar!
STEP FIVE: Go through the first tutorial for at least 15 minutes and take the first mastery test in the unit.
STEP FIVE: Woo! You did it! Now keep going, and finish all of the tutorials and mastery tests in each unit. Be sure you're taking notes along the way. Don't rush through your class! You need to have spent 5 hours on elective classes (art, music, photography, etc.) and 8 hours on core classes (math, history, English, Spanish, etc.)
Each class you take has a time requirement AND content completion requirements. These must be met in order to take your final exam (also known as the "End of Semester" test.) Here's how that works! (*If your course has the name "Benchmark" it works a little differently. We will talk about this together!)
You must have 5 hours in elective classes and 8 hours in core classes.
You must complete a mid point check in, DBA, and notes before your final can be unlocked (see below for details)
You must have a 60% or higher for your end of semester test (EOS) to be unlocked.
You must achieve a 60% or higher on your End of Semester Test.
You must have a 60% or higher overall average in your class (after completing the EOS) to count for completion.
MID-POINT: Half of your class is locked. Halfway through your class we will have a mid-point check in. Please go to my website and set up a Zoom meeting. We'll talk and I will be sure you are on track for the remainder of your class, and then I'll unlock it! It's important that you start with Unit 1 and don't skip ahead to other units.
NOTES: You will need to turn in notes at the end of your class. You must submit notes BEFORE I will unlock your End of Semester Test. Note-taking just means jotting down the most important information from each lesson. Have questions about how to take notes? Call me or check this out: I need help with taking notes!
DISCUSSION BASED ASSESSMENTS (DBA): Before I unlock your End of semester test, you must set up a Zoom meeting with me to complete your discussion based assessment. These questions are locked and are at the end of your class. I will unlock them when you schedule your DBA meeting so that you can review the questions and prepare to talk about the answers. I will use this to ensure that you are prepared to take your end of semester test.
END OF SEMESTER TEST (EOS): You may also hear this called your final exam. This is a cumulative test (that means it will pull information from each unit of your class) that will count for 30% of your grade. This will remain locked until you have completed your DBA and submitted your notes. You must pass this with a 50% or above in order to pass the entire class.
We expect you to complete a minimum of six courses each semester. This will help keep you on track for graduation.
We ask that you work Monday through Friday (4-6 hours a day is a good time frame!), but the weekends can be used to get ahead or catch up if you fall behind.
We will set weekly goals together over Zoom, and I will follow up with you on these throughout the week.
If you are having any issues with your computer, or questions about your classes, be sure to call me so we can address those as soon as possible.
You are required to contact me weekly! When we talk initially I will set up a regular time for us to meet over Zoom and set your goals for the week. We call this your "Mentor Contact." It's totally fine if your camera is off. Be sure Zoom is downloaded on your computer and your phone, that will make it much easier for us to accomplish this!
I will check in with you throughout the week to see how things are going and if there's anything I can help with you. Expect to speak with me at least twice per week.
Parents of students under the age of 18 will receive a weekly phone call or text from me with updates on student progress. Parents, please be sure to reply to me, even if just with "ok," so that I know you are receiving the updates! I appreciate it!
If you need extra help with an assignment, please make sure you contact me so that I can assist you or get you set up with a tutor.
Please make sure you work through the tutorial/ lesson, practice (if applicable), and the Mastery Test at least one time before scheduling tutoring. Tutors require that the students have worked a minimum of 15 minutes in the tutorial, mastery test, and/or post-test before tutoring will be provided.
The tutoring sessions are 30 minutes to 1 hour. If you must cancel please try to give at least 24 hours’ notice.
Power Hour is a fun hour where we get together for a brain break of some sort. This may be a game, this may be students who want help on a particular subject, I will change this based on what my students like and need from me any given week. Power Hour will be held: TBD!
