About Mangalore University
Mangalore University was established in 1980 to fulfill the aspirations of people of undivided Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu district. Mangalagangothri the campus of Mangalore University is located about 20 Kms to the South-east of Mangalore sprawling over an area of 353 acres. The university has 28 Post-graduate Departments offering 41 P.G courses and 26 Ph.D. Programmes. There are 188 affiliated Colleges including four constituent Colleges and 5 autonomous Colleges. With Foreign students enrolment both for P.G. and Ph.D., research in collaboration with National level research centers, increased Endowment Chairs, and Study centers, Correspondence course programme, Mangalore University is placed in high ranking level. The University is maintaining a close liaison with the public of the coastal region and Kodagu through various meaningful programmes including University-Industry Interactions, extension activities through N.S.S., and various endowment chairs.
About UGC Centre for Women Studies
The UGC Centre for Women Studies, Mangalore University was established in 2005. With grants from the University Grants Commission of New Delhi, it has been working towards creation of a gender-sensitive climate at various levels in academic and public life. Prof. Kishori Nayak was the first Director of the Centre between 2005-August 2014. Prof. Sabiha Bhoomigowda took over and was the Director till June 2016. Dr. Anita Ravishankar served as the Director till May 2023. At present Prof. B. K. Sarojini is the Director (in- charge) of the Centre.
The centre has been a centre of activities since its inception. It has mission to promote awareness among both women and men, of the need to develop and to realize their full potential as resources for national development in its economic, political and socio-cultural aspects. It also offers teaching programs as the open elective courses to post graduate students under CBCS scheme. It also conducts sensitization programs to ensure gender sensitivity among staff and students, both men and women. It is aimed to organize research activities with a special focus on solving women’s problems related to socio-economic, educational, health, psychological, political, literary and cultural aspects. Prime motto of the centre is to organize extension activities especially for women in villages for promoting awareness of special programs for women, their laws and rights. Many seminars, workshops and conferences related to women’s issues and empowerment have been organized by the centre. The centre always working on advocacy related programs, to influence public opinion on women’s issues. The centre has organized training programs to women in areas such as local government, legal awareness, computer literacy, and need based promotional programs including vocational, career oriented training and human resource development. It had conducted over 100 lectures and workshops on varied women related issues and gender equity. The International women’s day has been celebrated every year with the full participation of students and women employees of the campus. Local heroes and achievers are honored during this event. So a national conference on the Gender Equity is planned to have a dialogue with the budding social scientists which would result in inclusive development in the society.
