He was Captain of the Barque “General Wool” which was lost at sea off Charlotte Bay, Cape Hawke, NSW on route to the port of Newcastle, north of Sydney on the 9th of February  1868, the day of his 4th wedding anniversary ,when a strong easterly gale wrecked the ship with the loss of all crew, there were no survivors. Reports of the shipwreck were  printed in the Sydney Morning  Herald.

The General wool was a three masted Barquentine of wood construction with a draught of 2.6 meters and a gross tonnage of 171 tons. It was built in Baltimore in the United States of America in 1849. Official number 40317. Registered number 46/1861. It’s cargo was “Ballast” and it carried a crew of seven.
