Aspects of orchestration have been mentioned in the section on instrumentation and this provides a huge basis for sonority too.
Another important point is the fact that the vocal tessitura of the song is so high providing a sense of intensity from the vocalist portraying Elphaba. Singing a top F sharp fortissimo in bar 167 requires vocal belting (F is the actual pitch). This comes across as extremely heartfelt and dramatic.
Slurs are used to provide legato articulation. For example, the ostinato used in the bridge (bar 88, 2'48) is phrased like this to provide a smooth and hazy sonority.
Many notes are accented (e.g. from bar 1), often with staccato too to provide a bold and valiant accompaniment to sections of excitement (e.g. 2nd verse, bar 63, 2'10).
