While creating a website, film, and seminar presentation, I experienced both pleasant and challenging experiences that shaped my view of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. During the website development process, I gained a lot of experience and a deeper understanding of how digital platforms serve diverse user needs. While working on the website, I became more familiar with the content management system, which is important for structuring and styling web pages. I also gained a solid understanding of basic JavaScript for interactive features, which taught me to balance functionality and aesthetics. I also got more detail-oriented as I worked to ensure the website was responsive, accessible, and consistent with DEI values. However, I also faced various problems during the website development process, for example making sure the website was completely functioning across all devices and browsers, accessible to all users, and user-friendly.
Moving on to the video process, I've seen that I've improved my skills with video editing software and learned more about multimedia production, such as scripting, filming, and editing--all of which I had never done before. However, when it comes to video production, I usually struggle with the artistic aspects such as animation, effects, and transitions. Making the film made me more conscious of how media portrayal influences public opinion, particularly in terms of diversity. I had to ensure that my content covered a range of identities, experiences, and perspectives by focusing on offering a range of perspectives.
For Seminar presentations evolved in numerous ways, like: During the seminar process, I received more research experience, improving my understanding of digital communication concepts and DEI principles; also, I improved my communication skills by presenting clear messaging to the audience. And I learned more about teamwork and collaboration; we've learned more about each other's perspectives and duties. In addition, I became more comfortable designing slides and multimedia tools. However, there were some challenges experienced during our seminar presentation, such as technology concerns. We attempted to ensure that the program ran smoothly and without any technical issues. We had to be well-prepared to respond to the audience's concerns.
Overall Working with different peers has greatly influenced my approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
(DEI). Working with people from various backgrounds has given me a better grasp of systemic disparities
and how they effect individuals in unique ways. I've learnt that DEI is more than just representation; it's
about solving deeper, systemic issues that affect underrepresented communities.
Through collaboration, I've come to accept intersectionality—the idea that people's identities (race,
gender, class, etc.) intersect and influence their experiences in diverse ways. Conversations with peers
from other backgrounds have also taught me the value of acknowledging my privilege and biases and how
they shape my perspective. Creating inclusive environments where everyone feels heard is also very
important, and I have personally experienced that different points of opinion could produce more original
and successful ideas.
