It's not an overstatement: museums are Vienna's main attraction for a curious visitor. Thanks to the city's Habsburg past and thriving modernism of 1900, world-class painting and design collections abound. You can also find fascinating smaller exhibits, such as those at the House of Austrian History, the Jewish Museum, and the Architecture Center. Vienna's museums are visitor-friendly and provide informative wall texts in perfectly written English. More details below.

The Vienna Museum (German: Wien Museum or Museen der Stadt Wien) is a group of museums in Vienna consisting of the museums of the history of the city. In addition to the main building in Karlsplatz and the Hermesvilla, the group includes numerous specialised museums, musicians' residences and archaeological excavations.

In 2000, the courtyard was roofed over. In 2003, under the direction of Wolfgang Kos, the museums of the City of Vienna were united under the umbrella name of Vienna Museum and the Historical Museum was renamed Vienna Museum. In early 2006, the foyer was renovated and in addition, new exhibition space was created in what had been a storage area.

Former imperial stables have been transformed into the MuseumsQuartier, a vast cultural complex incorporating performing arts venues, event spaces and restaurants. Its centrepiece museums are headlined by the Leopold Museum, a white-limestone light-filled space where expressionist art includes the world's largest collection by Egon Schiele.

Vienna was instrumental in the careers of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss (father and son), Brahms, Mahler and more (many of their preserved former residences have been turned into museums themselves). For an engaging introduction to the composers, and the wider sphere of sound and music, high-tech exhibits at the Haus der Musik let you "compose" your own waltz and "conduct" the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

In some ways, this fervor from the public is a bit of a surprise, since Vienna is already packed with museums, among them the Albertina, mumok, the Kunsthalle Wien, and more, all of which are walking distance from the Heidi Horten Collection. But Husslein-Arco did not seem shocked that the museum already had such a large audience.

A group of museums in Vienna have banded together to create an OnlyFans account where, for $5 per month, subscribers can view works of fine art including the aforementioned sculpture (a nude female figure made of limestone and dating back to circa 25,000 BCE), paintings by the expressionists Egon Schiele and Richard Gerstl, work by graphic artist Koloman Moser, the Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, and more. The initiative is a response to guidelines on other, more mainstream social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, that keep the museums from sharing images with nudity there.

With its art treasures spanning seven millennia - from the earliest civilizations in ancient Egypt to the end of the eighteenth century - the Kunsthistorisches Museum  (KHM) in Vienna ranks among the worlds greatest and most significant museums. SICKinsight spoke with Felia Brugger, who is responsible for the KHMs security management, about strategies towards effective and yet visitor-friendly protection of the exhibits.

Felia Brugger: The KHM network includes several museums, and for every single one of these museums, it is appropriate to use superlatives. Just in terms of architecture, the Kunsthistorische Museum on its own is among the most important buildings of Viennas Ringstrasse Boulevard. The Paintings Gallery accommodated there is world famous. The same building also houses our collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, the Egyptian and Near Easter collection, as well as the coin collection, which features about 700,000 items, making it one of the worlds largest coin collections. Every year, our museums captivate thousands of visitors. I feel it to be a privilege every day to be able to work in a house like this.

Felia Brugger: Security in museums encompasses the area of conflicting priorities between presenting and conserving. After all, the objects are supposed to be close to the viewer, they are meant to touch, as it were, without being touched. Protection requires making compromises on a permanent basis. In historical buildings like ours, some measures are either impossible to implement altogether or only with very extensive efforts. Therefore, the protective action always constitutes a combination of structural, mechanical, technical, personnel, and organizational measures.

So here, I am giving a review of some of the most popular and the best museums, so you can decide and plan your itinerary. You may not agree with me, and you are welcome to leave a comment at the bottom to share with us your favorites, and which museum you recommend!

What should I cover? While I am giving a review of the museums that are included in the past, there are so many city classics that should not be ignored or skipped! The Schnbrunn Palace, obviously, is a number one choice, being the former summer residence of the Habsburgs impressed with imperial ceremonial rooms and magnificent gardens. It is one of the few Baroque palaces that are worthy to be compared with Versailles! ff782bc1db
