Research Interest
My current research was motivated by the clinically observed therapeutic efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with psychiatric disorders. Neuronal hyperactivity can exert both beneficial and detrimental effects on the brain—it underlies the mechanisms of interventions such as ECT and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), but also contributes to the pathogenesis of disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Alzheimer’s disease. I am particularly interested in how excessive neuronal activity induces plastic changes at the molecular and cellular levels, including alterations in gene expression, nuclear structure, epigenomic regulation, and neural circuit function. Through this line of work, I seek to better understand the biological basis of psychiatric conditions and ultimately contribute to the development of more effective treatments.
