It's no secret waste production is a large product of human existence. Namely, the major contributors to the global problem are the culinary industries and the supply food chain. For instance, "in 2021, retailers produced 5.12 million tons of excess food, with nearly 35% disposed of in landfills or incinerated"[1]. The two industries are responsible for tons of food waste that has detrimental effects on the planet. With our idea, we plan to lessen Earth's burden and reduce food waste.
Industry Examples
The cruising industry is one of the biggest industries responsible for food waste. Spanning more than 200 ships across the globe, ships carbon footprint are visible from miles away. Although cruise companies have started measures to reduce food waste, it is not enough. With our AI program, cruise companies can aim to cut food expenses and save energy overall.
As the heart of food and energy transport, it is also a major contributor to food waste due to inefficiency and overproduction. Supermarkets stand as lighthouses in communities and provide warmth and food. However, over 30% of inventory is still thrown out yearly. The waste of food can also be seen as a waste of energy and natural sources. By using our program, supermarkets can curve expenses and start a more sustainable and ecologically healthy future.
Our Solution
To resolve the issues mentioned above, we plan on utilizing an AI program to provide accurate predictions of the amount of food each establishment should prepare. Our AI , Munchi.ai will be trained using reinforcement learning that will continuously analyze the data collected from grocery stores and cruise ships/food establishments to then feed into a neural network for pattern recognition and therefore allow predictions of food purchased or supplied.
