I'm a first-year Computer Engineering student at Mumbai University, and I find myself in a state of utter frustration and uncertainty. It's been months since we appeared for our Sem 1 exams in February, yet the university has failed to release the results. To add to the chaos, they now expect us to give our KT paper starting from 14th June, while our final Sem 2 exams are scheduled to begin on 15th June.

The problem lies in the fact that without knowing our Sem 1 results, it's impossible to prepare effectively for the KT paper or the Sem 2 exams. How can we allocate our time and resources appropriately when we have no idea which subjects we may have failed?

Earlier this year in May, the Governor had cautioned Vice Chancellors of all state universities over delays in results. Noting that prospects of students are directly linked to declaration of results, the Governor, in a meeting addressing VCs had said that they would be held responsible in case of delays by their respective universities.

An RTI filed by activist Vihar Durve revealed that nearly 73,000 students or 30 percent of the 2.19 lakh applicants for re-evaluation of papers between 2014 and April 2016 were erroneously failed. The results of the re-evaluated papers are often declared after repeat examinations have already been conducted.

Mumbai University has nearly 750 colleges within its ambit. This year, about 19 lakh answer scripts were produced by 5 lakh undergraduate and postgraduate students studying in affiliated colleges. Although not all examinations are evaluated centrally, the university is nevertheless under-resourced both in terms of infrastructure and manpower to be able to efficiently operate a system of this magnitude.

This cycle of examinations has witnessed unprecedented delays and blunders in the process of evaluation. In an effort to ensure seamless and timely declaration of results for the winter examinations, Mumbai University has decided to operate its Centralised Assessment Process (CAP) centres on weekends and public holidays too.

The CAP centres, scheduled to run from 7 am to 8 pm, aim to accelerate the evaluation of answer papers and streamline the result declaration process.
