The School of Education, in collaboration with the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics, invites educators, students, and community members to a one-day symposium focused on the role of multilingualism in education. As national discussions on language policy evolve—including a recent executive order designating English as the official language of the U.S.—this event will focus on the importance of changing old conceptualizations of language in schools as well as valuing the vibrant contributions of multilingual students.
The symposium will feature Dr. Karla Lomelí (Santa Clara University), Dr. Anthony Muro Villa III (Cal Poly graduate – currently at the University of California Riverside) and Dr. Eduardo Muñoz-Muñoz (San Jose State University). Their research and practice is centered on all aspects of teaching and learning as it relates to multilingual leaners. Their research focuses on the practices and perspectives of highly effective teachers serving immigrant-origin Latinx/e/a/o students, enhancing teacher education and students’ STEM experiences, as well as the development of Critical Language Awareness in (bilingual) teachers. Through their insights, participants will engage in discussions on how educators and practitioners can support students from all linguistic backgrounds while ensuring access to educational and professional opportunities.
This symposium aligns with Bailey College’s commitment to fostering an informed and engaged learning community. Educators will gain practical tools and strategies to support multilingual learners, while faculty and students will have opportunities to explore effective approaches to language education in light of recent policy changes. By bringing together researchers, teachers, and advocates, we aim to strengthen pathways for all students to thrive academically and professionally, regardless of their linguistic background.
Join us as we navigate the evolving role of language in education and work toward a future where all students have the opportunity to succeed.
Lunch will be provided. Event will be located at Advanced Technology Labs (ATL)
