Multicultural education is a school's ongoing attempt to implement diverse educational opportunities for all children. This includes helping children succeed in their personal and academic lives while incorporating effective teaching styles in the curriculum. Knowing and using Funds of Knowledge is one way that educators can implement these strategies.
Funds of Knowledge is best expressed as collections of knowledge based in cultural practices that are included in a families inner culture. It is the knowledge that students and family members have due to their roles in their families, communities, and culture.
Funds of Knowledge means that educators draw on the talents and strengths that students bring to their education. When an educator knows and uses Funds of Knowledge, that means they know the whole child and not just simply the student. This creates an environment where students feel seen, understood, and valued. Educators gaining a better understanding of a student can enhance the classroom practices for both the teacher and students.
This is important because students often isolate themselves and don't see themselves belonging to a community in their education. Changing the environment in the classroom will open students up to engaging more and change the attitude students come in with. If a child feels seen, understood, and valued then they are more likely to provide their knowledge and experiences in the classroom. Educators that know the whole child will be able to implement what they know in the classroom. This can help them enrich their acadmic content while motivating students to engage in the material. Being able to develop academic content that relates to the child's skills and experiences will help scaffold a students understanding of the material.
Educators can implement this practice in the classroom by getting to know their students better. Educators can ask students about their interests and how it relates to the classroom, share personal experiences, and have discussions. The classroom can be left open for informal conversations, students can decorate the classroom, and there can be a shared space in the classroom. Educators can also make positive phone calls or leave positive messages. There are many ways that this practice can be implemented in the classroom. The purpose of this practice is to ensure students that they are not just a body on a seat but rather an individual full of experiences, knowledge, and assets that are valued.
