WHAT IS A BANK
# Banking – A Basic Introduction
## 1. What is a Bank?
A **bank** is a financial institution where people keep their money safely in the form of deposits. The bank also lends money to those who need it, such as individuals, businesses, or government organizations. In simple words:
* **Accepts deposits** → Keeps your money safe.
* **Provides loans** → Lends money to others for a fixed interest/markup.
* **Acts as a financial bridge** between depositors (savers) and borrowers.
---
## 2. What is a Cheque?
A **cheque** is a written order by an account holder to their bank, instructing the bank to pay a specific amount to another person or to themselves.
* It is a **piece of paper with the account holder’s signature**.
* Banks verify the details before making payment.
* To make it more systematic, banks issue a **cheque book** — a collection of pre-printed cheque forms provided to account holders.
---
## 3. Types of Bank Accounts
Banks offer different kinds of accounts to meet customer needs:
1. **Current Account** – Used for daily transactions. No interest is paid, but unlimited withdrawals are allowed.
2. **Savings Account** – Suitable for individuals who want to save money and earn some profit/interest.
3. **Fixed Deposit Account** – Money is kept for a fixed period (e.g., 6 months, 1 year) with higher returns.
4. **Loan Accounts** – For customers who borrow money and repay in installments.
## 4. Banking Services for Individuals
Banks provide several services for personal use, such as:
* **Cash Deposits & Withdrawals**
* **Cheques & Online Transfers**
* **ATM/Debit/Credit Cards**
* **Utility Bill Payments**
* **Loans (Car Loan, House Loan, Personal Loan, Education Loan, Mortgage, etc.)**
## 5. Why is Banking Important?
* **Safety of Money** – Keeps money secure.
* **Easy Transactions** – Provides cheque, transfer, and online banking facilities.
* **Credit & Loans** – Helps people buy homes, cars, or start businesses.
* **Economic Growth** – Banks collect savings and use them to finance trade, industry, and infrastructure.
* **Trust & Records** – Every transaction is documented, creating trust between people and businesses.
Content gives readers a **clear foundation** of banking in a simple, easy-to-understand style.

⚡ Suggestion, Mukhtar Sahib: If you like, I can also make this into a **“Training Module Format”** (like Lesson 1, Lesson 2, Lesson 3) — which will look like an **official Staff College course handout**.
Understood, Mukhtar Sahib ✅

# **SECURITY ACCEPTABLE TO BANK**
*(As per SBP Prudential Regulation of Credit)*
Banks must ensure that loans and advances are **secured adequately**. Security protects the bank from default and ensures smooth recovery. The following types of security are recognized and widely used:
---
## **1. Property / Equitable / Mortgage**
* Real estate or immovable property is pledged to the bank.
* Considered **strong security**.
* Bank holds **legal rights** over property; can recover loan in case of default.
* Examples: Residential/commercial property, land, building.
---
## **2. Hypothecation**
* Goods remain with the borrower in their own premises (godown).
* Bank does **not have physical control**.
* Considered **weaker security** due to risk of misuse or loss.
* Common for working capital loans where goods need to stay with business.
---
## **3. Pledge of Goods**
* Goods are stored in the **bank’s godown under lock and guard**.
* Customer must pay equivalent value to withdraw goods.
* Bank issues **Delivery Order**; goods released by bank officers as per recorded quantity.
* Considered **strong security** because bank has **physical control**.
---
## **4. Loan / Finance Against Insurance Policy**
* Life or general insurance policies can be pledged as collateral.
* Bank may recover outstanding loan from policy proceeds in case of default.
* Considered **medium strength security**, depending on policy value and terms.
---
## **5. Loan / Finance Against Salary Undertaking**
* Bank grants loan based on **salary guarantee from reputable companies**.
* Company undertakes to deduct installments if borrower defaults.
* Considered **reliable security** when company is financially sound.
---
## **Conclusion: Security Strength Hierarchy**
| Security Type | Strength |
| ------------------- | -------- |
| Property / Mortgage | Strong |
| Pledge of Goods | Strong |
| Insurance Policy | Medium |
| Salary Undertaking | Medium |
| Hypothecation | Weak |
✅ **Key Point:** Every banker must evaluate **strength, control, and recoverability** of security before sanctioning credit.
---
**also create a small visual chart showing Strong → Weak Security** so the pages look **more professional and student-friendly**.
Foreign Exchange refers to the value of one country’s currency in relation to the currency of another country. In simple words, it is the rate at which one currency can be exchanged for another.

وَأَنْ لَيْسَ لِلْإِنسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
"And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives."
— (Surah An-Najm, 53:39)
I am Mukhtar Ahmed Khan, born in 1955 in Pakistan. From humble beginnings, I was selected in 1974 by United Bank Limited (UBL) with a basic salary of just at Basic Salary Rs. 135/ Total Gross 380/ per month. That modest appointment marked the beginning of a long and eventful journey through Pakistan’s evolving banking sector.
At UBL, I was trained thoroughly and quickly rose in ranks due to my hard work, punctuality, and honesty. In 1988, I attended a 6-month course at UBL Staff College, securing two distinctions and placing 3rd out of 33 officers. I also ranked 8th in a Foreign Exchange Course attended by 48 officers nationwide.
By the mid-1990s, I had grown into a capable, trusted banker, and in 1995, I was promoted to Officer Grade 2. I had served across Karachi, Hyderabad, and Islamabad, maintaining spotless conduct and earning the trust of clients and colleagues alike.
On the morning of October 12, 1997, I entered my UBL branch — as usual, with punctuality and pride — only to learn I had been forcefully retrenched, along with 5,416 other officers across the country. There was no prior notice. No compensation. Just a sudden order.
At the peak of my career, with decades of dedicated service, I found myself unemployed.
To support my family and children’s education, I accepted a lower-ranked job as Officer Grade 3 at Bolan Bank in February 1998, earning only Rs. 3,950/month — 25% of my last drawn salary.
This humiliation, stress, and financial strain triggered Acute Renal Failure (ARF). I was hospitalized and began a long fight against declining health — a battle that continues to this day.
Despite setbacks, I remained steadfast in my duty. Over 43 years, I served in 9 banks, including:
United Bank Limited (UBL)
Bolan Bank
Bank Alfalah
Bank Al Habib
PICIC Commercial Bank
Bank Islami
Summit Bank (Makramah Bank)
Askari Bank
JS Bank
Each transfer was followed by loyalty from clients who chose to continue with me. I transported millions of rupees safely, often driving to Nooriabad, Karachi SITE is Hub of Industries and Back Bone of Pakistan Economy Most of them Knows me very well Because of my Good relationship in Person.

factories with cash — protected only by Allah.
1993: Received Cash Award of Rs. 50,000 after passing the Banking Diploma
Served as Vault Key Holder, always on time
Lived by 3 principles: Punctuality, Honesty, and Steadiness
Even while commuting 100 km to Nooriabad, I never missed opening the branch on time.
All three of my children have earned Master’s degrees. My daughter is married and working in Dubai. My elder son served as Operations Manager and now works in the textile industry. My younger son, with a Master’s in IT, lives in Dubai with his family. My wife and I now live a peaceful life, though I continue to seek justice from UBL regarding my pension and wrongful retrenchment.
In 2024, I appealed to the Supreme Court of Pakistan for UBL to grant my pension as per the 2023 SC Verdict. I met the Deputy Registrar at SC Karachi, and was advised to file a contempt petition — they even offered an Advocate-on-Record (AOR) free of cost, saying there is no time limit. I am still pursuing this path for rightful justice, even in my retirement.
I gave my blood and soul to the banking sector.
I never took bribes, shortcuts, or betrayed trust.
I remained loyal to every institution and respected by every client.
This is not just a story — it is a legacy of honor, pain, resilience, and unshakable faith in Allah.
“May Allah reward every honest effort, and let no sincere struggle go unseen.”
