A NYSUT Social Justice Podcast

At Many Threads One Fabric, we understand that our stories, while unique, are part of a larger human story. By sharing those stories, we can find common ground within our diverse worlds and experience the American motto of ‘E Pluribus Unum.’ At NYSUT, we see it as our Many Threads creating One Fabric.

Teachers of Color Mini-Series

In New York State, only 19% of teachers are people of color while 56% of students are students of color.

This year, in Season 2, we begin by airing a Teachers of Color miniseries, which aims to get more students of color thinking about going into careers in education. Because if we could just put one student on to teaching, or being a principal, or a social worker, or a guidance counselor, or any other kind of education professional, then we did our job. Having people who work at our schools, that look like the students who go to our schools, is really , really, really important. So to all of our students of color, take a look at teaching, and get ready to make a difference.

This week, we talk to Mr. Watkins and Mr. Green who tell their story of how they became teachers.
