A driver is a software component that lets the operating system and a device communicate. For example, when an app needs to read data from a device, it calls a function implemented by the operating system. The operating system then calls a function implemented by the driver. The driver, usually developed by the device's manufacturer, knows how to communicate with the device hardware to get the data. Once the driver gets the data, it gives it back to the operating system, which then gives it back to the app.

Drivers don't always have to be developed by the device's manufacturer. If a device follows a published hardware standard, Microsoft can write the driver, so the device designer doesn't have to provide one.

Not all drivers communicate directly with a device. Often, several drivers layered in a driver stack take part in an I/O request. I'm going to agree with CathyO that the device was launched a long time ago and we don't have a W11 only driver, however, if you go the the Drivers and Downloads for the device, and filter on W11, it does show we have a compatabile driver, Drivers & Downloads - WorkCentre 6015 - Windows 11 - Xerox.

While I don't have a 6015 , I was able to install the driver on W11 and it appears to work.

1. Was able to get it to upload the patch. Then, the driver up did upload. I was able to print one photo and scan one doc. Didn't use the printer for several days, then it would not work at all--not to print or scan. The printer hardware is still in excellent condition, but the message reads that the PC does not recognize that the printer is plugged in, or attached by USB port.

3. To answer basic questions : A. Yes, I am clicking the drop-down box on Windows 11. But that does not change the driver choice. B. Yes, I have uploaded both patches underneath the only driver choice. C. Yes, I have installed dirvers before and operated computers for 40 years. D. Yes, I had unplugged the USB port and turned off the computer when installing, then plugged in and turned on when the appropriate instructional box said to. E. Yes, I have chut down and restarted the PC in between trying again to upload the driver.

After the installation completed, it appeared as Canon MX920 series Printer WS and I was able to successfully print a Windows Printer Test Page. I tried opening a print dialog in Chrome, and then clicked "print using system dialog..." and that also worked, bringing up the familiar Canon printer control software that I had on my old PC. I am using PVS 2012 to deploy Windows 2019 server on ESXi 6.5. When I run Windows update, it keeps pushing the "VMware, Inc. - net - 1.8.17.0" driver update, and I cannot prevent it from installing. This causes the image to BSOD during boot after installation.

I have seen this a couple of times. I generally recommend to NOT update virtual machine tools drivers via Windows Update, this has to be a controlled process. You can configure a group policy/registry setting, to prevent drivers from Windows Update/WSUS.
