Engaging the World is a group of classes that offer a critical look into important topics within the humanities. Each class is themed around an important social issue, with a new theme every year.

This first-year seminar examines personal and social responsibility in domestic and global contexts. In developing their own view of the world and its many peoples, societies, and environments, students will evaluate the complex relationships that may both promote and obstruct human interaction. The course emphasizes critical thinking and creativity focused on contemporary and salient issues as informed by their historical contexts. The seminar is inquiry-based, writing intensive, and taught from a variety of perspectives. Offered fall and spring.

This first-year writing course prepares students to develop as writers through extensive practice in process strategies, argumentation, and research methods. Students will learn and apply rhetorical strategies to write effectively in print and electronic environments for a variety of audiences, and will learn to think, read, and write critically about significant issues in multiple contexts. A grade of C- or better is required for graduation. Offered fall and spring.

This course is intended to help students develop a deep conceptual understanding of statistics. This foundation will enable them to be rationally critical consumers of statistics, by preparing them to make informed decisions based upon the statistical information with which they are presented on a daily basis. Topics include descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. These topics are approached in a way intended to develop the associated basic skills as well as to help the students develop a deeper understanding. This preparation will make them familiar with the underlying principles and ready them to ask the right types of questions when presented with an argument that relies on statistics.

Students in Biomedical Engineering with Electrical emphasis must complete the foundation courses for Electrical Engineering, with Mechanical emphasis must complete the foundation courses for Mechanical Engineering, and with PDM emphasis must complete the foundation courses for Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering.

Interdisciplinary Engineering students are able to complete one group of foundation courses from another major. For example, you may choose to complete the foundation courses for mechanical engineering.

The MBA degree program requires between a minimum of 33 semester hours (11 classes) and a maximum of 54 semester hours (18 classes). The program is divided into three major components: 7 foundation courses 8 common body of knowledge (CBK) courses, and 3 elective courses.

The foundation component is designed to quickly give a non-business undergraduate student the same academic knowledge-base as that of an undergraduate business student. Some, none, or all of these classes may be waived if students have completed appropriate undergraduate course work at acceptable performance levels, which is a B- or better.

Applicable undergraduate course work for OMGT 6123 and FINA 6144 waivers must be completed within five (5) years of acceptance into the MBA program. There is no time limit associated with undergraduate coursework for waivers for ACCT 6241, MGMT 6102, MKTG 6162, FINA 6204, and FINA 6214.

Undergraduate Courses

The seven MBA foundation courses and the corresponding ECU undergraduate courses required for each course waiver are listed below. Students applying from other institutions should match completed course work as closely as possible to ECU course names.

CBCT Foundation Courses are led by Senior CBCT Instructors. These courses are appropriate for beginners as well as experienced meditators. Because they are led by Senior Instructors, CBCT Foundation Courses fulfill a requirement for admission into the CBCT Teacher Certification program, which you can learn more about here.

Foundational Requirements ensure that you achieve competency in a variety of communication and quantitative skills. You may be eligible to place out of some foundational requirements by taking proficiency or placement exams in English, language, or computing. If you require additional work and support in these vital skill areas, you will find the help you need through this series of coursework.

Students who transfer 25 college credits or more in the Lubin School of Business, the Lienhard School of Nursing, and the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems may fulfill language Core requirement by taking one culture course with a prefix of ARA, CHI, FRE, JPN, GRK, ITA, JPN, LAT,RUS, or SPA.

The ECE Department offers two Foundation Courses in each concentration area within the Department. Foundation Courses cover material considered to be fundamental in each area.
