Photonics is the backbone of telecommunication. Long-distance high-speed transfer of data, be it text, picture, voice, or video, requires communication through optical waves. Today, optical fiber communication connects billions of people across the oceans. Free-space optical communication and Li-Fi are also paving their way steadily in connecting people together. Advancements in the ongoing 2nd revolution of quantum technology have necessitated securing our telecommunication network. Quantum Physics in conjunction with Photonics Technology is the route to a high-capacity secure telecommunication network. The ongoing and futuristic developments in this direction require dedicated efforts in research, and development in the area of Photonics and Quantum optics. We expect tremendous growth in this field in near future, which would require the creation of skilled manpower in this area. Spanning diverse topics such as fiber optics, nanophotonics, semiconductor photonics, photonic materials, guided wave components and devices, this multidisciplinary domain drives advancements in optical communication, data encryption, quantum computers, high-performance computing, optoelectronics, sensing, and signal processing. With the announcement of the National Quantum Mission (NQM), Photonics has to play a key role in the objectives of the mission. Hence, a requirement of trained professionals is required. The MTech Photonics course not only aligns with the NQM, but also trains manpower for Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat, Atmnirbhar Bharat initiatives of Govt. of India.
