ABOUT US: The student organization "MSU Weightlifting Club" was formed in 2019, but existed off and on in the 70's, 80's, and earlier with training location in the Jenison Field House on the MSU Campus (see photo from MSU archives from 1957). The club was re-formed in 1992, and was housed at the Lansing Catholic High school under the name of “Cougars WLC”. In July 2015 Crossfit Shift welcomed the club to train at their facilities, and the name changed to “Shift WLC.” Due to space restrictions at MSU, MidMitten Crossfit/BBC opened their facilities to allow the students to hold group trainings since 2019.
This is a USAW affiliated club (Spartan WLC and as a university program).

Good bye and good luck, President Gabe!
"The weightlifting club has been one of the real highlights from my experience at MSU, I got to train all four years and during the pandemic it was one of the few things that allowed me to leave my apartment, otherwise I think I could go days without stepping foot outside. That year I didn’t have a roommate so the most in person interaction I got really was the weightlifting club. I’ve really enjoyed all of the time I’ve spent weightlifting, every single week it was something to look forward to, it was never even close to being a chore."
43rd Spartan Open Weightlifting Championships
Date: Saturday, April 15, 2023
This is a USAW National University Qualifying event (NUQ).
Registration: Online on USAW BARS. Non-refundable entry fee $65.00. There will be a cap of 60 lifters.
History: The original two Spartan Open were held in 1973 and 1974 at Michigan State University. After a hiatus it was then organized by Fred Lowe 1982 - 2022 (except 2021) for 40 years! Special guest in 1982 was Norbert Schemansky. Since the meet was restarted in 1982, U.S. Olympians Mike Karchut (1972, 1980), Fred Lowe (1968, 1972, 1976), and Iraqi Olympian Steve Mansour (60, 64, 68) have competed in the event. U.S. Senior National medalists Joel Widdell, Dave Polzin, Al Jakubowski, Jim Hewelt, Bud Charniga, Tom Hood, Bob Suchyta, Dave Phillips, and Joelle Emery have registered performances at this contest as well as World Master Weightlifting Champions Marni Thurston and Marianne Huebner. While women weightlifters were included in the Olympics for the first time in 2000, women competed in the Spartan Open since 1982.
