Based off your readings in Chapters 3 & 4, pick two of the following characters to compare in an analysis based off the following prompt. Use textual evidence to support your argument. Your response must be at least 7-9 sentences long. ANSWER IN THE PUBLIC GOOGLE DOC SPACE BELOW.

Characters:

  • Lennie
  • Crooks
  • Candy
  • Curley’s wife

PROMPT: Based off the historical context of the novel, we find many of the characters presented as experiencing marginalization in one way or another. Each of these characters individually find ways to cope with their marginalizing experiences on the ranch and in society in slightly different ways. All find a common thread in coping, however, through dreaming of either past “better times” or escaping to alternative realities via dreams or fantasies. At one point in this section of reading, the above characters find themselves physically in the same room, but emotionally “escaping” their reality in different ways. Compare the different approaches to “dreaming” amongst the characters. Explain the aspects of their identity or circumstance which marginalizes them as well as how they cope with that reality.
