What is Narrative Writing?

• A type of writing that tells a story

• A writer narrates a story or shares and experience with others

• Typically follows a sequence of events (chronological order)

• Narratives usually begin with an engaging lead, contain rising action until it reaches the most intense part (climax), falling action, and then an ending which brings resolution to the reader

What is Informative Writing?

• Used to inform (tell) your readers about a specific topic or idea

• Answers how or why with straightforward information

• Other words for inform: define, describe, explain, illustrate, instruct

English 10 Prompt: Research suggests that laughter improves people’s emotional and physical well-being. Write a research-based essay to inform the reader about the positive effects of laughter on emotional and physical health. Properly cite research evidence to inform the audience about the topic.

English 9 Prompt: Write an informative essay about a character from ancient Greek mythology. Summarize the plot of the myth and explain the cultural significance of the mythological character.
