Why Global Competency?
"In today's world, education is no longer just about teaching students something, but about helping them develop a reliable compass and the tools to navigate with confidence through an increasingly complex, volatile, and uncertain world" (Schleicher, vii). We are now more connected than ever, but at the same time, more divided. Inequalities around the world are increasing but now we can see it on the global stage. Smartphones have enabled us to witness the conditions in other countries and even in different regions of our own, bringing distant realities closer to home. Global Competency allows students to be active participants in global change. Students look at local and global issues, view or listen to others' perspectives, communicate with people of differing backgrounds and ultimately take action either in their locally or globally. Why Global Competence? Because the world our students will grow into is a world of interconnectedness and we need to prepare them for it.
