Why Elementary School Counselors?!

You would be surprised how many times I have been asked, "what do you do with those little kids? They really don't have real problems do they?"

"Elementary school counselors are educators uniquely trained in child development, learning strategies, self-management and social skills, who understand and promote success for to- day's diverse students. They implement a school counseling program to support students through this important developmental period."

What we say here stays here...

Confidentiality is an important component of the counseling relationship. However, students are informed at the beginning of the counseling relationship that if they reveal they wish to do harm to themselves, someone is harming them, or someone else's safety is threatened, confidentiality will be broken. In addition, students are encouraged to share with their parent and/or teachers, or the counselor will ask for permission to share if it is relevant to a third party.
